Hi everyone!
I live in Antalya, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. You might associate it with beach holidays, the fun and the sun. It's certainly true but not for the whole year, unfortunately.
The vacation season is over and it's getting colder these days. Yesterday, for example, the temperature suddenly dropped to 14 degrees Celsius and the there was a beating wind. It felt so cold! Well, I know that it's not really cold - for in some places where you live it's really freezing now and even snowing in some parts. But I'm sure you understand that, when you live in the same place, you get accustomed to the local weather.
Anyway, I felt so cold yesterday that I started craving for some comfort food. And I could also feel how my mood was changing - I was getting sadder all of a sudden, for no particular reason - I bet you know this feeling! And I also realised I was in the mood for some poetry.
Yellow leaves
Playing with the wind -
Autumn is beginning.
Or this one, from my student -
Early morning.
Mother is going to wake me up.
Poor me!
They are both examples of Japanese three-line poems called haiku or hokku. The lines should have the following size; 3-5-3 syllables. But who can limit one's creativity! So here's the news: I'm inviting you, my dear friends, to join our English Haiku Contest. I'm going to publish them here and you're going to vote for the best one. Think of a topic, a feeling or an emotion, choose a key word and write your three-line haiku verse.
Send your haikus to olegiovenko@mail.ru Can't wait to read your poems!
